Cocoplum Village Shops Celebrates New Giraffe Sculptures

Apr 21, 2016

North Port, FL April 15, 2016 -- Local kids stuck their necks out to participate in a contest to name giraffe sculptures at the Benderson Development-owned Cocoplum Village Shops in North Port, Florida. The winners were announced on Friday, April 15 during a celebration at Cocoplum featuring free activities for kids including bounce houses, face painting, tumbling demonstrations and games; a radio remote broadcast with 92.9 FM Kix Country DJ Todd Matthews; and gift card give-aways from all of the merchants at Cocoplum Village Shops. The steel and metal giraffe sculptures were built by world-renowned sculptor Fredrick Prescott. His creations can be found across the country and world, including installations in Japan and Germany. “We added the giraffes to add more visual activity to the shopping center — we always want to add to our shopping centers,” Chait said. “We think it’s fun — giraffes are a fun animal, and they’re always an attraction at zoos.” There were 75 total entries for the contest, with 24 coming from kids ages 7 and under, and 51 from kids ages 7-12. Each submitted a name idea, a drawing of a giraffe, and a one-page short story about the giraffe’s personality, with five winners chosen from each category. The drawings were done by hand, and the city of North Port’s Economic Development Program Manager Ruth Buchanan said the idea was to get the kids involved, as well as to get them thinking.
